From Pippi Longstocking to master French painter and botanist Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s watercolours of flowers—Péro by Aneeth Arora’s references are as whimsical as the detailing on her garments. You can expect anything from secret embroidered messages to appliqué hearts when it comes to the label’s aesthetic.

Péro’s upcycling story begins with Arora’s official travel companion—an old Ralph Lauren denim jacket. First, a few pins were tacked on, then a trim from her first collection, an embroidered patch from the second, a button or two from the third. And before she knew it, her favourite denim jacket became her first upcycled garment. Photographer Dayanita Singh fell in love with the personal narrative that Arora’s jacket had become and came back to her with an old black trench that she wanted to make new again, and that’s how the sub-brand Upcycled by Péro began. “I realised there are some pieces of clothing that you fall in love with, even with the way they age and fade. But you might want to upgrade it, make it wearable, even special again,” says Arora. Soon heirloom saris were patchworked and healed with lace and chikankari, while old lovers had secret notes embroidered into the jackets they wore on their first date. It is as much a memory project as it was a way to conserve and protect fashion from unnecessary wastage.
